Why Personal Development Should Be a Priority
Whether you’re a real estate investor or someone seeking improvement in your life, personal development must be a key priority. The reason is that through growth and development, you acquire tools that help you solve increasingly complex problems and effectively cope with disappointments.
What is Personal Development?
Some schools of psychology would say that personal development is the realization of a person’s full potential. Abraham Maslow referred to this as self-actualization – a state in which all physiological and emotional needs are met and a person can truly be their best self because they’re not trying to fill needs.
Some folks may indeed experience their highest potential despite not being loved unconditionally or feeling a sense of belonging. The best place to start when thinking about personal development as answering the question, “Who do I want to be?” The answers must be objective and measurable, but related to how you feel about yourself. In other words, personal development is not just characterized by an increase in material possessions, but how you feel internally about where you are.
Create Objective Goals
Objective goals in personal development are straightforward. Take inventory of your greatest successes and greatest areas of opportunity for growth. These two incidents look very different. The way you react to adversity is opportunity for personal development. When tough times come – especially those of high stress, are you more likely to buckle down or does your brain fry a bit?
The reality is most people don’t react well to stress, and personal development is an opportunity to address these deficiencies with easily applicable techniques. Many of these techniques simply involve slowing down the mind to process information. Many times, when stress occurs, things appear to be moving fast and you feel as if you’re drowning. Upon reflection after a stressful time, people often find they have opportunities to change the course of events but don’t see the solution in front of them.
Slowing the mind down to deal with stress is critical to personal development. These times when you feel overwhelmed are often the times as real estate investors when hasty decisions are made. There are several ways to handle stressful situations:
- 24 Hour Rule: Give yourself 24 hours before deciding on something of high intensity. This allows emotion to wane and logic to get back into your brain. Doing this technique enhances personal development because you develop analytical skills under pressure.
- Meditate: Long favored by Eastern traditions, meditation is the exploration of your mind. Find a place that’s quiet and close your eyes for 10 minutes. Solely focus on breathing, as this clears the mind of clutter.
- Journaling: Writing down your thoughts contemporaneously is the best way to get a window into how you are feeling at the time and changing it around the next time you’re in a similar situation. Use this information to shape your responses.
Personal development is the key for any person to handle life’s challenging times with increasing ease. When seeking to grow in any field, it is important to set a good foundation. Knowing who you are and how you react to different situations is an easy way to reach your fullest potential.
